The salary of Prison officers in Ghana is similar to the salary structure of other government workers in the country. Their salary structure is based on the Single Spine Salary Structure.


There are several factors that influence a Prison officer's salary. These are years of service, rank, allowances and qualifications. The higher the certificate or qualifications, the higher the salary.


Ghana Prison Service Salary and Ranks 


Here is a breakdown of Prison service ranks and salary per month:


A. Recruit Officers


Entry-level officers who have completed training but are yet to be fully integrated into the service can expect to earn between GHS 1,500 and GHS 2,000 per month.


B. Corporal


Corporals, who are ranked above recruits, typically earn around GHS 2,200 to GHS 2,800 monthly.


C. Sergeant


Sergeants of the Ghana Prison Service have more responsibilities and earn between GHS 3,000 and GHS 3,500 per month.


D. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP)


ASPs are in the officer cadre, and their salaries range from GHS 4,500 to GHS 5,000 per month.


E. Superintendent of Prisons


Officers at this rank take on greater leadership roles, and their monthly salary is between GHS 6,000 and GHS 7,000.


F. Deputy Director of Prisons


Senior officers with significant responsibilities can expect to earn upwards of GHS 8,000 to GHS 10,000 monthly.


G. Director of Prisons


The Director of Prisons, being the highest-ranking officer, earns over GHS 12,000 per month.

As I said earlier, salary of a government official depends on the person's years of service, rank and qualifications. The more experience and rank he gains, the higher his salary.


General Requirements for Ghana Prison Service 

All applicants interested in joining the Prison Service must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant should be a Ghanaian citizen by birth 
  • He or she must have a good character with no criminal record 
  • He must have not been dismissed from school or work site
  • Must be minimum height of 5.6ft for males and 5.2ft for females 
  • Be physically and mentally fit according to the Ghana Prison standard 
  • Have been registered with the appropriate professional body and of good standing
