Unfortunately, most Ghanaians now join the Police service due to lack of jobs and not passion for the job. A majority of the police recruits are not there to serve the country but to cure unemployment.

There are unverified reports that nearly 80% of applicants are turned down each year. Understanding this will help you to control your emotions once you are being rejected.
How to Become a Police Officer in Ghana
Here is everything you need to work for the Ghana Police Service:
1. Meet the Basic Requirements
To qualify for the Ghana Police Service, you must meet certain criteria. These requirements are designed to ensure that candidates are physically, mentally, and morally fit for the job. Here’s what you need:
- You must be between 18 and 25 years old. However, there are exceptions for candidates with higher education or professional qualifications
- A minimum of a Senior High School (SHS) certificate or its equivalent (WASSCE/SSSCE) with credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics
- You must be a Ghanaian citizen by birth
- You must be in good physical and mental health, with no serious medical conditions
- You must have a clean criminal record and demonstrate good moral character
2. Stay Informed About Recruitment Announcements
The Ghana Police Service typically opens recruitment exercises once or twice a year. These announcements are made through official channels, including the Ghana Police Service website, national newspapers, and social media platforms. Keep an eye out for these notices, as they provide detailed information about the application process, deadlines, and requirements.
3. Prepare Your Application
Once recruitment is announced, you’ll need to submit an application. This usually involves filling out an online form on the Ghana Police Service recruitment portal. Be sure to provide accurate and complete information, as any discrepancies could disqualify you. You’ll also need to upload scanned copies of your educational certificates, birth certificate, and other required documents.
4. Pass the Entrance Examination

8. Graduate and Begin Your Career
After completing your training, you’ll graduate as a police officer and be posted to a station or unit.
